DetailsYour obligations under the Berlin Street Cleaning Act
The Berlin Street Cleaning Act (Berliner Straßenreinigungsgesetz) places the duty to clear and grit footpaths on the adjoining property — which means the owner and, depending on the lease, the tenant or managing agent. Anyone who fails to meet that duty, or meets it inadequately, is personally liable for injury and property damage when someone slips.
In practice: footpaths must be cleared and treated against ice from 7 a.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. on Sundays and public holidays, continuously until 8 p.m. Where snow keeps falling, clearing has to be repeated. A single pass in the morning does not discharge the duty.
